Omalizumab is a recombinant DNA–derived, humanized monoclonal antibody that inhibits the binding of IgE to the surface of mast cells and basophils, thereby limiting the release of mediators of the allergic response. In multiple studies, omalizumab has proved to be an effective treatment for moderatepersistent to severe-persistent asthma, improving symptoms as well as reducing exacerbations and health care utilization.
